Iron III chloride (FeCl3) is commonly used as a coagulant in water treatment plants to remove suspended solids and dissolved contaminants from water. The process works by adding FeCl3 to the water, which causes the dissolved contaminants to clump together and form larger particles easily removed by filtration or sedimentation. FeCl3 is particularly effective at removing iron and manganese, which can cause discoloration and staining in water. Additionally, FeCl3 can also be used to remove heavy metals such as lead, copper, and zinc from water.
