Ferric chloride, also known as iron(III) chloride, is a dark brown, corrosive compound typically supplied as a 40% aqueous solution. It is derived from iron and chlorine and exhibits strong oxidizing properties, making it ideal for water purification.
Ferric chloride is primarily used for coagulation and flocculation in water and wastewater treatment plants. When added to water, it destabilizes suspended particles, colloids, and dissolved organic matter, forming flocs that can be easily removed by sedimentation or filtration.
In both municipal and industrial wastewater systems, ferric chloride reacts with dissolved phosphates to form insoluble ferric phosphate, which is then removed through sludge settling. This process is essential in preventing eutrophication in natural water bodies.
Ferric chloride controls hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) emissions in anaerobic systems by converting it into insoluble iron sulfide. This not only mitigates odors but also reduces corrosion in pipelines and treatment equipment.
Due to its high affinity for complexing with metals, ferric chloride is also used to precipitate heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, and chromium. It forms stable compounds that are separated during the treatment process.
Ferric chloride can reduce COD levels by precipitating dissolved organic pollutants and aiding in the removal of biological and non-biological contaminants.
✅ High Efficiency: Effective over a wide pH range (4.5–9.0)
✅ Fast Reactivity: Rapid floc formation and settling
✅ Multi-Functionality: Works as a coagulant, precipitant, and odor controller
✅ Low Sludge Volume: Produces less sludge than aluminum-based coagulants
✅ Cost-Effective: Lower dosage compared to some alternatives
When handled properly, ferric chloride is safe and compliant with EPA and WHO water quality standards. It also supports sustainability by reducing eutrophic discharges and enhancing water reuse capabilities.
Ferric chloride stands out as a versatile, reliable, and sustainable solution for a wide range of water treatment challenges. Whether it’s phosphorus removal, sludge management, or heavy metal reduction, its efficiency and adaptability make it indispensable in modern treatment systems.
