Activated Hydrazine Hydrate 24% — CHIMISCAV HHC-24

N₂H₄·H₂O

Hydrazine hydrate is a powerful reducing agent used to remove dissolved oxygen from boiler feedwater and protect steam systems against corrosion. CHIMISCAV HHC-24 is a 24% activated (catalysed) hydrazine hydrate solution manufactured by CHIMI ART in Egypt. The activation package accelerates the oxygen reaction at lower feedwater temperatures, making the product effective in boiler water treatment up to supercritical units operating at 3500 psi, and it also serves as a pharmaceutical intermediate.

Dosing Guidelines

The dose is calculated from the dissolved-oxygen content of the feedwater after mechanical deaeration: as a working rule, feed about 1 ppm of hydrazine per 1 ppm of dissolved oxygen, plus a small maintenance dose to keep a measurable residual in the boiler water. Inject continuously at the deaerator storage section or into the feedwater line using a metering pump, either neat or diluted with high-purity condensate. Control the programme by testing hydrazine residual and dissolved oxygen regularly, adjusting the feed rate to hold a stable residual. Our technical team can help commission a site-specific dosing programme for your boiler plant.

How It Works

Dissolved oxygen is the main driver of pitting corrosion in boilers and steam circuits. Hydrazine removes it through the reaction N₂H₄ + O₂ → N₂ + 2H₂O, producing only nitrogen and water, so no dissolved solids are added to the boiler and blowdown does not increase. In CHIMISCAV HHC-24 the hydrazine is combined with a catalyst that accelerates this reaction at the lower temperatures found in feedwater tanks and economisers, where uncatalysed hydrazine reacts slowly. Beyond direct oxygen scavenging, hydrazine passivates steel by converting loose hematite (Fe₂O₃) into the dense, protective magnetite (Fe₃O₄) layer, and it reduces copper oxides in mixed-metallurgy feed systems. Because hydrazine is volatile, a portion carries over with the steam and helps protect the condensate return system as well.

Usage Tips

Store CHIMISCAV HHC-24 in tightly closed original containers in a cool, dark, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, oxidising agents and acids; shelf life is 12 months under these conditions. Hydrazine solutions are toxic: wear chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and protective clothing, ensure good ventilation, and prefer closed transfer systems and metering pumps over open pouring. Never return unused material to the original container. Keep spill-control materials at hand and consult the Safety Data Sheet supplied with every delivery before first use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "activated" mean in CHIMISCAV HHC-24?

The 24% hydrazine hydrate solution contains a catalyst that makes the reaction with dissolved oxygen considerably faster than uncatalysed hydrazine, particularly at the lower temperatures of feedwater tanks and deaerator storage sections. This gives reliable oxygen removal in systems with short residence times or low feedwater temperatures.

When should I choose HHC-24 instead of 80% hydrazine hydrate?

Choose the 24% activated grade when faster reaction kinetics at lower feedwater temperatures are needed, or when a lower-concentration product simplifies on-site handling and dosing. The concentrated CHIMISCAV HH-80 suits plants that prefer to dilute on site and dose larger boilers economically.

How is the hydrazine dose for a boiler calculated?

Dosing starts from the dissolved-oxygen content of the feedwater after the deaerator — about 1 ppm hydrazine per 1 ppm dissolved oxygen plus a maintenance dose — and is then fine-tuned by monitoring the hydrazine residual in the boiler water.

What precautions apply when handling hydrazine-based products?

Hydrazine solutions are toxic. Wear chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and protective clothing, ensure good ventilation, use closed transfer systems, and keep the product away from oxidisers, acids and heat. Always follow the Safety Data Sheet, which CHIMI ART supplies with every delivery.

How should CHIMISCAV HHC-24 be stored and what is its shelf life?

Store in tightly closed original packaging in a cool, dark place away from sunlight, heat and incompatible materials. Under these conditions the shelf life is 12 months. The product is supplied in 200 L drums and 1000 L IBCs.
